Watercolour and Gel Pen

Each brushstroke in this watercolour narrative is meticulously choreographed to evoke whimsy and charm. Inspired by Winnie the Pooh, I selected Lime Yellow, Prussian Blue, and Yellow Ochre as primary colours, complemented by Burnt Umber and Crimson for harmony. Paying homage to E. H. Shepard's iconic palette, the colour scheme resonates with the beloved children's book and animation, seamlessly intertwining technique and vision.

The graded wash (from one colour changing value) wet-on-dry, variegated wash (one colour to another) both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, and glazing (one colour on top of another) are all employed in this piece. Hatching is judiciously applied solely in the rendering of the trees, adding depth and texture to their portrayal.

Strategic use of hatching, tonal variation, and contour lines (to indicate direction of flow or movement), combined with multiple layers of hatching, brings the verdant foliage to life, contributing to the enchanting atmosphere of the scene. The colour and hatching of the trees are emblematic of the ‘Hundred Acre Wood’ in Winnie the Pooh. This fusion of traditional and innovative approaches underscores my ongoing exploration of visual storytelling.
